We have commissioned a new work.
Our starting point was Reading Abbey – home of the round Sumer is Icumen In, which was written in the 13th Century. This celebration of the coming of summer is the earliest vocal composition set to a lyric in English.
We gave the first performance of the new piece in St. James Church, a stone’s throw away from the Abbey ruins, in summer 2014. It was then repeated at Whitley Arts festival on 24th October.
We chose Gabriel Jackson as the composer because his choral writing is influenced by medieval choral works. Gabriel has used a Latin hymn to the Virgin Mary from the Reading Abbey manuscripts and incorporated this with a modern text to juxtapose the musical and cultural connections between past and present.
