Clarinet Recital by Janet Hilton, followed by afternoon tea

Internationally acclaimed clarinettist Janet Hilton offers a Sunday afternoon programme of solo clarinet music, followed by tea and cake.

Janet is celebrating Reading Bach Choir’s 50th Anniversary year and her 50-year career as an international soloist, recording artist and Professor at the Royal College of Music. She will introduce and play a recital of music for solo clarinet, including works by Malcolm Arnold, Stravinsky and Richard Rodney Bennett.

CDs will be available to buy at a discount, including her latest disc of solo clarinet music, “Flying Solo” before its official release in December on the Clarinet Classics label (CD0072).

Janet, who lives locally in Checkendon, has recently revived her earlier interest in singing and now sings alto with Reading Bach Choir. We are delighted to be able to offer this recital as part of our celebrations for the 50th Anniversary season.

Janet Hilton first came to public notice in her student days in Manchester, when she played the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with the BBC Philharmonic and won a national competition, which brought her many engagements. She built a distinguished career as a soloist, playing at most of Britain’s major festivals, including the BBC Proms, winning widespread acclaim for her exceptional musicality. A reviewer in the Financial Times commented on “the long, rapt eloquence of her phrasing, shaped with the quiet freedom of a great singer”.

Janet has recorded much of the clarinet repertoire in a series of CDs for the Chandos label and other discs for EMI, ASV, BBC and for Clarinet Classics, a disc of four concertos that were written for her. Internationally she has played in most European countries, the United States, where for twenty years she was a member of the summer chamber group Fontana in Michigan, and in the Far East and Australia.

As well as her solo career, Janet has been an active orchestral player as principal clarinet with Welsh National Opera and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. A distinguished teacher, Janet was for twelve years Head of Woodwind at the Royal College of Music, where she continues to teach, also making international visits for concerts and masterclasses. Most recently, in September she visited Guangzhou in China.
