For JanJoost's last concert with Reading Bach Choir we perform Monteverdi's choral masterpiece in its 400th anniversary year. Regarded by many as one of the greatest glories of the baroque choral repertoire, and by some as the most significant and beautiful piece of sacred music in western history.
Spanning the changeover from renaissance to baroque, it combines operatic virtuosity with renaissance plainsong. Full of striking contrasts and joyously energetic, it is famed for the splendour and complexity of its choral writing.
The beautiful and wonderfully resonant church of Douai Abbey is the ideal setting for this work.
