Our first concert of the year is Reading Bach Choir's contribution to the celebrations marking the anniversaries of Purcell, Haydn and Mendelssohn. We perform some beautiful but seldom-heard works from the baroque, classical and romantic periods.

Henry Purcell was born in 1659 and died tragically young at 37; he wrote these sacred pieces in his twenties.

Haydn's light-hearted and humorous part-songs date from his old age: each one is an absolute gem showing him as sprightly as ever. He died in 1809, the year of Mendelssohn's birth; he was just 17 when he composed this scintillating and masterful Te Deum.

Taken together these composers, whose only real connection is the arbitrary date of birth or death, make up a fascinating and delightful programme, which we are confident you will enjoy.
